Why is Daisendorf referred to as a “commune” and not just a village? Daisendorf, nestled amidst the rolling hills of southern Germany, holds a unique distinction. It’s not merely a village, but a “commune”, a term reflecting its rich history intertwined with powerful entities. The history of Daisendorf dates back to the 8th century. Yet, its story truly begins in 1222 when the Salem Abbey acquired its tithing rights. This angered the Bishop of Constance, who believed he held rightful dominion over Daisendorf. This clash of powers led to a series of disputes, finally settled in 1285. However, hardship struck Daisendorf in the 14th century. Plague and a decline in grain prices devastated the community. The weakened Bishopric was forced to cede control to the Free City of Überlingen in 1334. But the Bishop, determined to reclaim Daisendorf, eventually bought it back for 400 guilders in 1507. This constant tug-of-war between powerful entities shaped Daisendorf’s identity. It finally gained independence in 1803 under the governance of Baden. This rich tapestry of power struggles and resilience is why Daisendorf is more than just a village. It’s a “commune”, a testament to its enduring spirit.
