Picture a steaming bowl of boiled white radish. This isn’t just any radish. This is Daiko-daki. You are standing right here at Daiko-in temple in Kyoto. This annual year-end tradition takes place at Daihoon-Ji Temple also known as Senbon Shakado. It’s held on December 7th and 8th. Thousands of people come to partake in this unique event.

The Daiko-daki event is part of Jodo-e a Buddhist assembly. It commemorates the day Buddha became enlightened. The boiled radish is believed to bring good health. This is more than just a tasty treat it’s a ritual.

Daihoon-Ji Temple’s main hall is one of Kyoto’s oldest buildings. It’s survived many wars including the Onin War. The war lasted ten years from 1467 to 1477. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. They’ve witnessed centuries of change. They’ve sheltered countless worshippers.

For 1000 yen you can get your own bowl of Daiko-daki. You’ll see women cooking and stirring the radishes in large pots. They prepare fifteen thousand dishes each year. The smell of the boiling radishes fills the air. It’s a fragrant blend of earthy sweetness.

Along with the radish you’ll find deep-fried tofu. Be careful it’s very hot. Don’t burn your mouth while trying to stay healthy. You can eat under a tent or inside the main hall. The main hall however has limited seating.

Near the main hall vendors sell white radishes. They have Sanskrit Siddham script on them. The script represents Shakyamuni Buddha. He’s worshipped here. This temple is called Senbon Shakado partly because of this. You might also find homemade bread plants or antique pottery. It’s a unique opportunity to find a special souvenir.

Daiko-in temple offers more than just a warming bowl of Daiko-daki. It offers a glimpse into Japanese history and culture. It’s a blend of tradition and community. It is a truly special experience. Remember to come early. You wouldn’t want to miss out on this unique culinary and spiritual event.
