Why did the French build a brewery on Elephant Mountain? We’re standing before Dai Yen Temple, a place deeply woven into Hanoi’s vibrant tapestry. While this temple itself isn’t on Elephant Mountain, its story is intertwined with that lost landmark. Dai Yen Village, nestled in the Thap Tam Trai area, traces its origins back to the Le and Nguyen dynasties. It evolved from a humble camp to a commune in 1915. Prominent families like the Hoang, Tran, Ngo, Trung, and Nguyen clans, each with their own family churches, called this village home. Elephant Mountain, once a prominent feature of the village landscape, was believed to be where ancient courts raised their elephants. A temple once graced the mountain’s peak. However, in 1892, a French businessman named Homen bought the temple and its land. He transformed it into a brewery, now the Hanoi Beer Company on Hoang Hoa Tham Street. This act, despite the villagers’ protests and the demolition of their temple, forever linked Dai Yen Village and Elephant Mountain to Hanoi’s evolving history. Dai Yen Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the village, a reminder of its rich past and the changes it has witnessed.
