VNU-HCM is a public research university system. It stands as one of Vietnam’s two national universities. The other is in Hanoi.

Founded on January 27, 1995, VNU-HCM has grown significantly. It was reorganized on February 12, 2001. The Prime Minister of Vietnam, Phan V\u0103n Kh\u1ea3i, made the decision. Today the university educates many students. In 2018, it had over 60,000 students.

VNU-HCM offers a wide array of programs. There are 165 undergraduate programs. It also provides 133 M.Sc. and M.Eng programs. For doctoral studies, there are 94 programs. The university covers diverse fields. These include technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities. It also includes literature, foreign languages and business.

\u0110\u1ea1i h\u1ecdc Khoa h\u1ecdc T\u1ef1 Nhi\u00aan TPHCM – C\u01a1 s\u1edf Linh Trung is located in Linh Trung ward, Thu Duc. This location is part of Ho Chi Minh City. The university’s main campus spans 643.7 hectares.

VNU-HCM has earned recognition in Asia. The QS University Rankings 2020 ranked it 201-250th in Asia. In 2020, it was among the first Vietnamese universities. It was listed in the QS Global Ranking of Top 150 universities under 50 years old by 2021.

The university’s history involves a merger. Nine universities combined to form VNU-HCM. This happened under Government Decree 16/CP. The declaration occurred on February 6, 1996.

In 2001, Prime Minister Phan V\u0103n Kh\u1ea3i signed a decision. It reorganized the university. VNU-HCM gained specific internal organization. It received priority in postgraduate education and science research. The aim was to significantly contribute to Vietnam’s development.

Some colleges were split from VNU-HCM. They came under the Ministry of Education’s management. Currently VNU-HCM includes several member universities, schools and institutes. These include the University of Technology and the University of Science. Also, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a member.

Other members include the International University and the University of Information Technology. The University of Economics and Law is also included. Furthermore, An Giang University and the University of Health Sciences are members. The School of Political and Administration Sciences also belongs to VNU-HCM. The Institute for Environment and Resources is part of it too.
