Doesn’t the Daejang Bridge stand as more than just a passage? It stands as a silent witness to Seoul’s tumultuous past. We are standing before the Daejang Bridge. This bridge connects Yongsan and Dongjak districts. It stretches gracefully over the Han River.

The Han River itself whispers tales of resilience. It has pontoon bridges once moored nearby. Yet, no fixed crossings existed until the Hangang Railway Bridge emerged in 1900. Imagine Seoul without a proper bridge. It is hard to fathom, isn’t it?

Plans for a road bridge remained elusive until 1917. The original footbridge emerged then. A flood damaged it in July 1925. A second span was added in October 1935. Tram tracks joined it too.

The Korean War’s outbreak brought tragedy to the Hangang Bridge. South Korean troops bombed it. Their aim was to slow invading forces. It was the river’s solitary road crossing then. The Hangang Bridge bombing claimed lives. Between 500 and 1,000 people perished. Most were civilian refugees unaware of the bridge’s planned destruction.

The Daejang Bridge wasn’t fully restored until 1954. Think about the years of separation. Think of the disrupted lives. This bridge symbolizes perseverance.

In 1982, additional lanes were incorporated. It was renamed Hangang Bridge. Today, it carries eight lanes of traffic. The Korea Meteorological Administration gauges the river’s freeze. They watch the 100-meter section. It is between the second and fourth posts of the southern span.

While not directly about the Daejang Bridge, the Banpo Bridge offers a vibrant contrast. It boasts the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain. This fountain is the world’s longest bridge fountain. It has 380 water jets and dazzling lights. This display runs from April to October. Each show lasts 20 minutes.

Another bridge, the Dangsan Railway Bridge faced its challenges. Following the Seongsu Bridge disaster, safety re-evaluation occurred. The Dangsan Bridge was rebuilt amidst controversy. Reconstruction concluded on November 22, 1999.

As you stand on the Daejang Bridge consider its history. Consider the lives it has connected. It has risen from the ashes. The Daejang Bridge is a symbol. It is a symbol of Seoul’s enduring spirit. The Daejang Bridge links not just districts. It links the past to the present. It paves the way to the future.
