A whisper of history brushes against your ear. You stand in Da Nang a city steeped in centuries of trade and conflict.

Da Nang’s story begins long ago. It was a vital port city under the ancient Champa Empire. The Chams ruled the southern coast of Indochina. Their influence reached far and wide. Da Nang thrived as a hub for trade with India and China. This lasted for centuries until the 10th century. Then came the Vietnamese Dai Viet Empire. They expanded southward. Eventually Da Nang fell under their control.

The city changed hands many times. During French colonial rule from 1888 to 1950 it was known as Tourane. It was a small fishing village initially. It grew as foreign ships began to call regularly. A clash between the French and Vietnamese lasted for thirty years. Da Nang’s port fell under the French until the Japanese occupation. It then passed back and forth again between the French and Vietnamese.

Da Nang played a significant role in the Vietnam War. American combat troops landed here on March 8 1965. This marked the beginning of large-scale American involvement in the conflict. Da Nang became a major military base. The US Naval Support Activity was established here. It played a huge role supplying troops in South Vietnam. The base grew to become the Navy’s largest overseas shore command. The war ended on April 30 1975. The city was liberated by North Vietnamese forces.

Today’s Da Nang bears little resemblance to its war-torn past. It has transformed into a modern metropolis. Industry and tourism drive the economy. The city has beautiful beaches hotels and resorts. It is a well-maintained and pleasant place to visit. Da Nang is also a center for education with several universities.

Da Nang has many nicknames. It’s called the City of Han River and the City of Bridges. Many bridges cross the Han River. Each one is unique and helps Da Nang’s growth and progress. The Dragon Bridge is an iconic symbol of the city. Its modern appeal and ancient legends have brought Da Nang into the 21st century. It is a vibrant city. Its rich history and culture make it a captivating destination for travelers.
