Were you aware that the houses on Domstraße were mostly built after 1846? Before that, this area was home to collegiate houses. These houses were largely surrounded by gardens. Clergymen lived here after the original monastic life had ceased.

Let’s focus on D09 \u2013 Domstraße 9. In 1306, fifteen curiae were located in this street. One notable building was the Stiftshaus “Zum Marienbild”. Around 1500, Henning Göde lived here. He was a famous jurist. He was also the Rector of the University of Erfurt and a Canon at the Marienstift. Henning Göde was born in 1450 and died in 1521. In 1607, the Stiftshaus “Zum Marienbild” became the permanent home of the Jesuits.

During the bombardment of 1813, most of the houses on Domstraße were destroyed. They were not rebuilt because the Marienstift lost its independence in 1837. This happened after long negotiations with the Prussian government.

On the grounds of the Stiftshäuser “Zur güldenen Pforte” and “Zum Löwenkopfe”, the two carriage houses were built. Today, they are partly ruins. The gymnasium was also built here. It belongs to the Ratsgymnasium.
