“Did you know that this Harvester Barn nearly vanished?” I ask you. Welcome to the story of the Harvester Barn. It is a rare gem from San Diego’s agricultural past.

The Harvester Barn, dating back to around 1890, stands as a testament to a bygone era. This Dutch-style barn represents the rural landscape that once defined San Diego County. Such wooden barns were once common, but very few remain today.

Bruce Coons, SOHO’s executive director, emphasized its importance. He called it a precious cultural resource that speaks to the region’s ranching history. These agricultural uses are dwindling along with the buildings that supported them.

Originally built by David Leonard Hoover, the Harvester Barn served multiple purposes. Hoover managed the nearby Santa Ysabel Store and a hotel. The barn was used for horse stalls, carriage storage, and harvesting equipment. A hayloft sat above.

Picture this: You are standing inside the Harvester Barn in its prime. The scent of hay fills the air. Horses are quietly munching in their stalls. Farmers are loading equipment for the day’s work.

SOHO, the region’s preservation group, stepped in to save the Harvester Barn. They purchased it to protect and preserve this rural historic resource. Bob McDaniel, a lifelong resident, played a crucial role. He alerted SOHO that the county planned to burn it down.

McDaniel asked Coons, “So, you’re the people who save things, right?” He then showed the letter about the barn’s demolition. SOHO contacted county officials, who were unaware of its historical significance. The county then funded a study that confirmed the Harvester Barn’s age and importance.

SOHO is restoring the Harvester Barn. The exterior restoration is nearly complete. This includes the cupola and a new roof. Redwood battens will be reattached. The building will be painted ivory, matching the Santa Ysabel Store. Hay pulleys will be reinstalled.

The Harvester Barn may soon host community gatherings and events. Imagine festivals, exhibits, and even weddings here. SOHO also plans to house historic vehicles in it. The Concord stagecoach and a turn-of-the-century carriage will be displayed.

The Harvester Barn is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. It represents Santa Ysabel’s agricultural history and retains its integrity. Its early construction date makes it a rare and significant property.

SOHO is grateful to Bob McDaniel who brought the Harvester Barn’s plight to their attention. McDaniel and his family ran the Santa Ysabel Store for decades. They donated historic items to SOHO. These items are now on display.

Though not yet open to the public, the Harvester Barn promises a glimpse into the past. It stands as a reminder of San Diego’s rural heritage. The Harvester Barn represents community, agriculture, and preservation.
