Over 900 souls rest here. This is the Lille Southern Cemetery. A Commonwealth War Graves Commission site. It holds a poignant history. A silent testament to sacrifice.

Lille Southern Cemetery is more than just a graveyard. It’s a historical landmark. It witnessed the ebb and flow of two world wars. German occupation. Allied presence. It served as a hospital. It served as a casualty clearing station. It’s a place of profound stillness. A place to reflect.

From August 27th to September 5th 1914 the Germans occupied Lille. They occupied it again in October. They held it until October 17th 1918. Allied artillery did not damage it. This cemetery played a key role in those tumultuous years. The Germans used it. After the armistice the 39th Stationary Hospital used it. So did the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station.

World War II saw more activity. In March 1940 the 50th Division was nearby. In May the No 10 Casualty Clearing Station used this cemetery. From the 16th to the 25th. The lives of soldiers intermingled with the grim realities of war. This place absorbed it all.

Today over 600 casualties from 1914-18 are commemorated here. Nearly 300 from 1939-45 are also here. A small number are unidentified. A special memorial stands for a UK soldier buried amongst them. Nearly 40 from the second World War are also unidentified. They rest amongst those identified. Their stories are forever woven into this landscape.

The French plot numbers are significant. Plot I is V2. Plot II is V4. Plot III is J1. British prisoners of war are buried in Plot III. Second War graves are in French Plot 82. The details are meticulously recorded. Each name a story of courage. A story of loss.

The cemetery holds 338 total burials. 321 are from the UK. 7 are Australian. 10 are from New Zealand. Each headstone tells a story. A unique story. A story of a life cut short. A story of a loved one’s sacrifice. Each one a precious life. Remember them all. Remember their sacrifice.

Lille Southern Cemetery stands as a silent reminder of the cost of war. It is a place of remembrance. A place of peace. A place to reflect on the sacrifices made for freedom. Take a moment to honor those who rest here. Let us never forget.
