In 1922, amidst a challenging drought, a beacon of hope emerged for Queensland’s women. Right here, at the CWA Hall in Samford Village, the seeds of change were sown. The CWA Hall wasn’t just a building. It was a testament to the strength, resilience, and community spirit of Queensland’s women. The Queensland Country Women’s Association, or QCWA, was born from a conference sponsored by the Brisbane Women’s Club. This conference, held in August 1922 during the Royal Exhibition Show, aimed to find ways to support country women facing hardship. Inspired by the initiative in New South Wales, the women decided to establish their own CWA chapter in Queensland. The CWA Hall in Samford Village stands as a symbol of this movement. The inaugural meeting saw Mrs. H. Fairfax elected as the first president, a pivotal figure in the QCWA’s history. All attendees became members of the general committee, empowered to establish branches across the state. The QCWA quickly blossomed, with CWA Halls becoming vital hubs in communities throughout Queensland. They served as essential meeting places, often the only ones available in rural areas. The QCWA extended its reach beyond social gatherings. It provided hostel accommodation for children attending secondary school, and hostels for expectant mothers. The CWA’s dedication to education, health, and community welfare was unwavering. As early as 1924, the QCWA encouraged members to provide a wide array of services to rural women and children. They established rest rooms, Bush Nurse Centres, and even Emergency Hospitals. Some branches even funded relieving housekeepers for families in crisis. Recognizing the importance of respite, the QCWA also provided affordable seaside accommodation for country families. The CWA Hall’s history intertwines with that of Ruth Fairfax House in Brisbane. Initially Holyrood Hospital, it was purchased and transformed into a hostel to accommodate women visiting from rural areas, a need amplified by World War II. Later, it became the state office, complete with an assembly room and residential club, named in honor of Ruth Fairfax. The CWA Hall’s story is also linked to the famous Lady Lavarack Cookery Book. The first state-wide cookery contest, launched in 1959, was a fundraising effort to pay off the debt for Ruth Fairfax House. This contest, and the subsequent cookbook named after the CWA’s patron Lady Sybil Lavarack, solidified the QCWA’s connection with cooking. This hall, and others like it, served as venues for countless community events, from meetings and fundraisers to celebrations and educational programs. The CWA Hall in Samford Village continues to be a vital part of the community, hosting various events and serving as a meeting place for local groups. The CWA Hall isn’t just a historical landmark; it’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of the QCWA, dedicated to serving the women, children, and families of Queensland.
