Amidst the vibrant energy of Madrid, discover the enchanting Cuatro Fuentes. These four elegant fountains, also known as Las Fuentecillas, grace the meeting point of Plaza de Murillo and Paseo del Prado. They stand as a testament to the vision of King Charles III, who dreamt of transforming this area into a grand Salón del Prado. The Cuatro Fuentes were originally designed by Ventura Rodríguez in 1781. They were meant for a different location in the same square. Imagine them nestled among the greenery, facing the Prado Museum. They weren’t always divided by the bustling Paseo del Prado. In the 18th century, they adorned the promenade known as Paseo de los Trajineros. Over time, as Madrid grew, the road widened, separating the fountains into two pairs. Each fountain tells a story. Admire the intricate carvings on the limestone columns, sourced from the quarries of Colmenar de Oreja. Notice the carved bear heads, a nod to Madrid’s heraldic symbol. Atop each fountain sits a charming child triton, embracing a dolphin. The original triton sculptures, crafted by Francisco Gutiérrez and Alfonso Bergaz, are now housed in the Museum of Origins. The fountains you see today showcase epoxy resin replicas, meticulously created in 1996 to preserve the originals. The Cuatro Fuentes, though small in stature, hold a significant place in Madrid’s artistic heritage. They offer a quiet respite, a moment to appreciate the artistry and history woven into the fabric of this vibrant city.
