Didn’t it all start with a chicken farm? Yes, it did. Right here stands California State University, San Marcos. Or CSUSM as it is commonly known. This public university began its life in 1989. It is the 21st campus to join the California State University system.
CSUSM has grown quite impressively since then. It now provides students with many options. There are 43 bachelor’s degree programs. Also, 24 master’s degree programs and 8 credential programs. It even offers a joint doctoral program with UC San Diego.
But let’s rewind a bit. Efforts to establish a university in North County began in the 1960s. A report in 1969 pointed out the area’s “ultimate need” for a university. Finally, in 1988, the CSU board purchased the Prohoroff Poultry Farm for $10.6 million. This 304-acre farm became the site for CSUSM.
Governor George Deukmejian officially created Cal State San Marcos in 1989. Bill W. Stacy became the first president. He recruited 12 founding faculty members. They received $3.9 million to start the university. These founding faculty are honored at Founders Plaza on campus today.
Ground was broken in 1990. Construction began on the former chicken farm. The first class enrolled in the fall of 1990. Initially, only upperclassmen were admitted to CSUSM. Classes were held at a satellite location. An industrial facility provided lab space for biology.
In 1991, CSUSM conferred its first degrees. Seven students received Bachelor of Arts degrees. The first official commencement was in May 1992.
The permanent CSUSM campus opened in the fall of 1992. Craven Hall, Academic Hall, and Science Hall I were the first buildings. The university had grown to 1,700 students. There were also 305 faculty and staff members.
CSUSM admitted its first freshman class in 1995. Lower-division courses were offered for the first time. Enrollment grew to 3,600. In 1996, Jean and W. Keith Kellogg II donated $1 million to the Kellogg Library.
A “building boom” transformed the campus. The University Village Apartments opened in 2003. They were the first on-campus housing. The Kellogg Library opened in 2004. It is a five-story building.
Today, CSUSM continues to evolve. It offers a wide range of academic programs through its four colleges. These are the College of Business Administration, CSTEM, CHABSS, and CEHHS.
CSUSM is recognized for its social mobility outcomes. It ranked #1 in the U.S. in the 2022 Social Mobility Index. The university also supports student life. There are over 100 recognized student organizations. The University Student Union offers various services and spaces.
The Sprinter hybrid rail service connects the campus to other cities.
The university’s athletic teams are called the Cougars. They compete in NCAA Division II. CSUSM won its first-ever CCAA Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner’s Cup in 2022–23.
Notable alumni include Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 and Shaun White.
From a humble beginning as a chicken farm, CSUSM has become a significant educational hub. It prepares future leaders and serves the community.
