A groundbreaking discovery. That’s what the CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology represents. This isn’t just a building. It’s a hub of scientific innovation. Right here in Delhi.
The CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology or CSIR-IGIB as it’s known. It started in 1977 as the Center for Biochemical Technology. Its focus then was biochemical research. Times changed. The focus shifted. In 2002 it became the CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology. The name reflects its evolution. It embraced a broader scope. Integrative biology became its new passion.
CSIR-IGIB has two campuses in Delhi. The older one sits on Mall Road. It’s near Delhi University’s campus. The newer campus is in South Delhi on Mathura Road. This institute has achieved remarkable feats. In 2009 it sequenced the zebrafish genome. This was a landmark achievement. It was the first vertebrate genome sequenced in India. Before this. Indian scientists had only sequenced bacterial and plant genomes. This was a significant step forward for Indian genomics.
CSIR-IGIB didn’t stop there. In December 2009 it performed India’s first human genome re-sequencing. The institute also contributed to decoding the first Sri Lankan and Malaysian genomes. Researchers developed a high-throughput next-generation sequencing approach. This was used to detect and study SARS-CoV-2. This approach significantly impacted Kerala’s policies and preparedness. The institute created the concept of MegaLabs for COVID-19 testing and genomic surveillance. This impacted several states. CSIR-IGIB reported India’s first COVID-19 reinfection cases. They also identified a novel SARS-CoV-2 clade. It was named I/A3i.
They discovered an emerging lineage. It had the N440K mutation in the spike protein. This mutation was associated with immune escape. The institute developed COVIDSure. This is a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction based kit. It is used for COVID-19 diagnosis. It’s widely used in India. Another remarkable achievement was FELUDA. This is a CRISPR gene editing-based test. It’s highly efficient and fast. It was approved by the Drugs Controller General of India and licensed to the Tata Group. CSIR-IGIB also plays a leading role in India’s national COVID-19 genomics consortium. It maintains important informatics resources and dashboards.
The CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology is also deeply involved in understanding rare genetic diseases. The Genomics for Understanding Rare Disease India Alliance Network or GUaRDIAN is a key initiative. It uses cutting-edge genomics technology. This technology helps clinicians diagnose rare genetic diseases. The institute also runs the IndiGen Programme for Public Health Genomics. This program sequenced over 1000 Indian genomes from diverse ethnic groups. The data provides valuable baseline information for public health applications.
