Crystal Springs wasn’t always a picnic area. Long ago it was part of Rancho Los Feliz. Can you imagine ostriches roaming here? There was even an Ostrich Farm. A railway brought visitors from downtown to see them. It was declared the acme of happiness for children.
The area’s history goes back further. The Great Depression brought the Civilian Conservation Corps. They helped build Crystal Springs. They planted trees. They built check dams. They improved the area. Crystal Springs officially opened in 1936. Families have enjoyed this spacious facility ever since.
Today Crystal Springs boasts picnic tables and barbecues. It’s unique. It’s the only place in Griffith Park where large groups can reserve an area for events. It’s also one of the few places where barbecues are allowed. The area is surrounded by large trees. They offer shade and beauty. These trees are important. Many are native Coast Live Oaks. They are part of Los Angeles history. A Heritage Western Sycamore is protected.
A recent settlement ensured that these trees are preserved. Plans are in place to replace any trees lost during development. The picnic area will be improved. New picnic tables and a new playground will be added. Even if a ballfield is built. The unique character of Crystal Springs will remain.
Crystal Springs Picnic Area remains a special place. It’s a place where families make memories. It is a place where traditions continue. The laughter of children echoes through the trees.
