Overlooking the sprawling city of Braga, the Cruz do Sameiro stands as a silent sentinel. It’s a beacon of faith, perched atop Monte Sameiro. The Cruz do Sameiro offers breathtaking panoramic views. But it’s more than just a scenic viewpoint. It’s a place of pilgrimage, a testament to Portugal’s deep-rooted Marian devotion. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro, which encompasses the Cruz, is second only to Fátima in its importance to Portuguese Catholics. The story of the Cruz do Sameiro begins in the mid-19th century with Father Martinho Silva. He envisioned a monument to the Immaculate Conception here, high above Braga. Construction of the domed church began in 1863. Over the decades, the sanctuary grew. It now includes the Casa das Estampas, the Rector’s House, the Chapel of the Eucharist, a crypt, and a grand staircase. Near the entrance, four statues honor theologians known for their Marian writings: Cyril of Alexandria, Alphonsus Liguori, Bernard of Clairvaux, and Anthony of Padua. The sanctuary’s centerpiece is a statue of Mary, sculpted in Rome and brought here in 1880. In the 20th century, artists like Querubim Lapa, Oscar Casares, and Clara Menéres contributed works to the sanctuary. Pope John Paul II visited the Cruz do Sameiro in 1982. He later bestowed the Golden Rose upon the sanctuary, a papal honor recognizing its significant contributions to the Catholic Church and society. The Cruz do Sameiro isn’t just a cross. It’s a symbol of faith, history, and artistic expression. It’s a place where the spiritual and the scenic intertwine, offering a truly memorable experience.
