Five stories tall and made of brick. That’s the Crozer Building. It stands proudly on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. This magnificent structure wasn’t always a school. Once upon a time it housed the American Baptist Publication Society.

Founded in 1824 the Society needed a new home. Their previous building at 1420 Chestnut Street burned down in 1896. A devastating fire destroyed millions of dollars worth of property including the Society’s precious library. Historical documents were lost forever. Imagine the heartbreak.

The Society rebuilt bigger and better. They commissioned Frank Miles Day a renowned architect. He designed a beautiful French Renaissance Revival style building. The Crozer Building was completed in 1899. Its three-bay arcade at ground level is a stunning feature. Eight brick floors rise above. Then comes the ornate cornice and two more stories of elegant terra cotta.

The building’s interior was once filled with the scent of ink and paper. Stacks of books lined the shelves. Employees diligently printed and bound religious texts. The Society published countless works. Even a children’s book called Dickey Downy. This autobiography of a bird cost only 60 cents in 1899.

Today the Crozer Building houses the Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter High School. The building’s interior has been transformed. Wireless classrooms and science labs now fill its spaces. It’s a testament to the adaptability of a structure that’s witnessed over a century of history. The Crozer Building’s story is one of resilience innovation and enduring legacy. It’s a Philadelphia landmark worth exploring.
