Picture the scene. Crown Hill Park unfolds before you a vast expanse of 242 acres. This isn’t just any park. It’s a piece of Denver’s history a testament to the pioneering spirit of the Lee brothers.

Crown Hill Park sits nestled between Wheat Ridge and Lakewood. It’s more than just a recreation area. It’s a National Urban Wildlife Refuge teeming with life. You can picnic hike bike or even ride horseback here. Imagine the Lee brothers Henry and William who homesteaded this land in 1860. They grew produce for Denver’s booming mining camps. They even planted the area’s first apple orchard.

Their story is woven into the very fabric of Crown Hill Park. They founded the Agricultural Ditch Company a vital part of the area’s irrigation system. Think about the ingenuity required to bring water to these thirsty plains. They sold the land in 1907 to the Crown Hill Association. That same association later sold 168 acres to Jefferson County Open Space in 1978. This ensured the park would remain a green space for generations to come.

Crown Hill Park boasts a diverse ecosystem. Though 85% of its vegetation is non-native grassland there are native plants. You can spot Canada wildrye foxtail barley and green needlegrass among others. Look closely for wildlife. There are beavers coyotes rabbits and squirrels. Above keep an eye out for birds like the bald eagle. Or perhaps a great blue heron. The park’s two ponds Crown Hill Lake and Kestrel Pond offer a unique habitat.

Crown Hill Park is more than trails and trees. It’s a living museum. It whispers tales of early settlers. It showcases the ingenuity of those who tamed this land. It’s a sanctuary for nature a vibrant part of Denver’s landscape. It’s a reminder that even amidst urban sprawl nature can thrive. It also holds a piece of Denver’s first auto-pedestrian accident. Henry Lee one of the park’s founders died from injuries sustained in 1914. His legacy however lives on in this park. A lasting testament to a pioneer’s dream. Enjoy your time in Crown Hill Park.
