In the heart of Detroit, the Croul–Palms House stands as a testament to a bygone era. This majestic Queen Anne style home whispers stories of two prominent Detroit families: the Crouls and the Palms. Let’s embark on a journey back in time to uncover the fascinating history of the Croul–Palms House. Jerome Croul, a successful wool and sheepskin merchant, commissioned the renowned architect William Scott to build this grand residence in 1881. The house cost a staggering $25,000, a testament to Croul’s prosperity. Croul, also a Detroit Fire Commissioner, spared no expense in creating a home that reflected his status. Just a few years later, in 1887, Croul sold the house to Celimene Palms, wife of the influential Detroit landowner, Francis Palms. Francis Palms had inherited a substantial fortune from his father, further solidifying the house’s association with Detroit’s elite. The Croul–Palms House remained Celimene’s residence until her death in 1914. After Celimene’s passing, the Croul-Palms House underwent a transformation, becoming a boarding house with 25 rooms. The Palms family, through their realty company, retained ownership until 1945. The house then transitioned into an eight-apartment building in 1954. It wasn’t until 1983 that the Croul–Palms House was lovingly restored and repurposed for office space. The Croul–Palms House stands out with its distinctive Queen Anne architectural features. The irregular massing, contrasting materials, and picturesque roofline are all hallmarks of this style. The 2½-story structure, constructed from red brick on a rock-faced stone foundation, exudes timeless elegance. Look closely and you’ll see the curved stone details, stone banding, and stone window hoods. The three-story bay windows add to the house’s grandeur. The multi-level roof, complete with projecting gables and decorative chimney caps, adds a touch of whimsy. While the front and side porches and a small third-floor balconet have been removed, and the original slate roof replaced, the exterior of the Croul–Palms House remains largely original, a true survivor of time. Originally, a two-story brick barn stood behind the main house, built just a year later. Sadly, this barn was demolished in 1954. The Croul–Palms House stands as a reminder of Detroit’s rich history. It tells a story of entrepreneurial spirit, architectural beauty, and the passage of time.
