“The Lord has brought us a long way.” What better way is there to start a story about a church than to quote from the Bible? This is the story of Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church, right here in Philadelphia. Founded in 1983, cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church has a history of determination and growth, always pushing forward under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The church was established by a small but dedicated group of 13 members led by Pastor Jesse F. Hayward. They first held their services in the home of James and Mary Taylor, a modest dwelling on Etting Street. As its congregation grew, Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church moved to 58th and Walnut Street in Southwest Philadelphia. Then, in a testament to its burgeoning community, it moved to 61 E. Penn Street, where the pastor and his family could live, and the church had a place to worship. Finally, after years of growth and relocation, Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church found its permanent home at 2219 W. Allegheny Avenue. As the church thrived, so too did its service to the community. Pastor Hayward dedicated his life to the Lord and to the people he served before his passing in 1995. Following Hayward’s death, Pastor John A. Johnson served as the interim pastor for a year. In 1996, he was installed as the new senior pastor, and the church continued its work, expanding its ministries to reach people in the community. Today, Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church is a thriving place of worship, a cornerstone of the community. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unwavering commitment of its members.
