Gazing across Cross Maidan, can you imagine this vast green expanse filled with bustling crowds? Cross Maidan in Mumbai is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to the city’s vibrant past. This 23,000 square meter “playing ground,” as “maidan” translates from Marathi, holds centuries of stories within its boundaries. The name “Cross” refers to the 16th-century stone cross erected during the Portuguese era. This cross, now at the northern end of Cross Maidan, wasn’t always there. It originally stood near the present-day Elphinstone Technical School, marking the edge of a pond where people washed clothes. Now, it stands as a beacon of faith, drawing devotees from all walks of life. Cross Maidan is also home to the Bhika Behram Well. Built in 1725 by a Parsi traveler, this well offers a constant source of fresh water, a rarity in this coastal city. But Cross Maidan isn’t just about historical relics. It’s a place of activity. Imagine cricket matches played on dry pitches and football games during the monsoon season. Picture the Mahindra United Club practicing on their leased portion. Envision the crowds attending rallies, exhibitions, and even circuses. Now, look around. A path cuts through Cross Maidan, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Churchgate stations. This shortcut, known as “Khau Galli” or “Food Lane,” buzzes with people hurrying to work. Cross Maidan, a place of history, faith, and everyday life, continues to beat at the heart of Mumbai.
