Slipping through time, imagine Crosby as a bustling crossroads. Not just any crossroads, but one etched into the very fabric of the Isle of Man’s history. Crosby, derived from the Old Norse “Kross-bør,” meaning cross farm or market, has always been a central gathering point. Today, Crosby is a charming village nestled west of Douglas, in the parish of Marown. The River Dhoo meanders south of the village, adding to its tranquil charm. But beneath this peaceful facade lies a vibrant past. The heart of Crosby beats within the stones of St Runius Church. Portions of this ancient structure date back to the 12th century, whispering tales of centuries past. Expanded in 1754, the church served as the main parish church until 1859. Then, a new church arose, and St Runius transitioned into a mortuary chapel, part of its east side sadly demolished. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was restored and reopened in 1959. Now, services echo within its walls during summer months and major festivals. Adding to the spiritual tapestry of Crosby is a Methodist chapel, opened in 1833. The village also boasts a language center, Yn Ynnyd Çhengey, keeping the flame of language and learning alive. Whispers of the past linger near the railway station site. Opened in 1873, the station bustled with activity until its closure in 1968. Though demolished, the crossing keeper’s cottage remains, a silent sentinel watching over walkers on the Heritage Trail. But Crosby isn’t just a place of quiet reflection. The roar of engines once filled the air. The A1 road through Crosby formed part of the Highland Course and the Four Inch Course, both legendary racing circuits. The legendary Isle of Man TT motorcycle races thundered through Crosby from 1911 onwards, leaving an indelible mark on the village’s identity. So, as you stand in Crosby, imagine the echoes of those races, the murmur of prayers in ancient churches, and the lively chatter of a marketplace. Crosby is more than a village. It’s a crossroads of history, culture, and the enduring spirit of the Isle of Man.
