How about a story about peace and faith? Right before us stands Cristo Rey. It is a beacon of hope for Cali. This iconic statue has a rich history. It embodies the spirit of this vibrant city.

Cristo Rey’s story began in 1949. José María Arteaga, a Jesuit priest, envisioned a monument. It would celebrate the end of the War of a Thousand Days. The war had ended fifty years prior. Arteaga secured funds to bring his vision to life. Alideo Tazzioli, an Italian sculptor, was commissioned. He would design this imposing figure.

The statue was inaugurated on October 25, 1953. The ceremony marked a historic day for Cali. Monsignor Caicedo Téllez, Bishop of Cali, held Mass. An estimated 30000 people attended.

Cristo Rey stands tall at 26 meters. It weighs a massive 464 tons. Each arm weighs 25 tons. The statue is made of iron and concrete. It is on the Cerro de los Cristales. This hill is named for the quartz found there. The structure was designed to withstand tremors. Its construction required 36 tons of steel, 1050 sacks of cement, and 100000 liters of water. Local guadua bamboo was used for scaffolding.

The area around Cristo Rey is a place of pilgrimage. It is also a tourist attraction. Artist Carlos Andrés Gómez created biblical scenes on 34 ravines. This artwork enhances the spiritual experience. The sculptures range from 50 centimeters to 5 meters. They stretch over five kilometers. Visitors can see Existence, Lament of the Pacha Mama, Golgotha, and The Garden of Eden.

The entrance to Cristo Rey is free. It is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. The site includes a chapel, restaurant, and parking. Vendors sell local foods and handicrafts. These include wafers, chontaduro, and traditional shampoos.

Cristo Rey offers panoramic views of Cali. The monument is near traditional pizzerias. They offer an illuminated view of the city at night.

Getting to Cristo Rey is easy. The road to the hill is paved. Visitors can drive or walk. Taxis and Ubers are readily available. The MIO mass transport system also provides access.

Since its reopening after the quarantine in September 2020, Cristo Rey has police surveillance from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on weekends they close at 8:00 pm. On special dates like its anniversary, it stays open until 11:00 pm. There is guarded parking for those arriving by car.

Cristo Rey is more than a religious monument. It is a symbol of peace. It embodies Cali’s history and culture. As you stand here, feel the embrace of Cristo Rey. It seems to offer protection to Cali.
