Perched high above the Douro River stands Crestuma a village steeped in history. Its name itself whispers tales of the past a blend of “Castrum” meaning elevated settlement and “Uíma” the river that flows nearby. Crestuma’s story unfolds like the river itself flowing from ancient times to the present day.

For centuries Crestuma flourished. A document from 922 mentions a hermitage and cemetery within a monastery and village. Legend claims King Ordonho of Leon and Bishop Gomado sought refuge here. Later Queen Teresa granted Crestuma to Bishop Hugo of Porto. Its history is intertwined with the powerful church. This area became a couto a fortified territory until the early 19th century.

Crestuma’s strategic location along the Douro fostered growth. Textile mills and foundries brought prosperity. The village became one of the most advanced in the region. The energy crisis of the 1970s however brought hardship. Many emigrated seeking better opportunities. Buildings from the former textile industry remain in the Fontinha area. They stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era.

Despite the challenges Crestuma retains its charm. The church of Santa Marinha is a symbol of the village. Its architecture is described as somewhat advanced with a distinctively cut roof. Nearby stands the Quinta da Estrela easily identified by its large star-shaped garden visible from the river. The stunning views from the church’s forecourt the Aral Chapel and the wayside shrines all add to Crestuma’s character.

The Crestuma-Lever Dam constructed between 1976 and 1985 harnessed the power of the Douro. This impressive feat of engineering is a testament to the village’s adaptability. The dam’s reservoir created a vast expanse of water reflecting the surrounding hills and forests. The dam also significantly altered the landscape. It did however create a new economic opportunity.

Crestuma is a place of contrasts. The past and present intertwine. Modern facilities like a gymnasium and sports center coexist with ancient structures and folklore. The village’s location on the hillside offers breathtaking views down to the river. The village is surrounded by valleys pine forests and fertile plains. A scenic backdrop for a vibrant community.

The legacy of Crestuma continues. The Nautical Club a national champion even hosted international competitions. Its many clubs and associations keep the village spirit alive. The stories whispered through generations. Crestuma’s journey from ancient settlement to a modern village is an enduring testament to its resilience.
