The Cremorne Theatre, the heart of Brisbane’s entertainment scene for decades. Standing proudly in the heart of South Brisbane, it was once a must-see for all who sought a night of laughter, excitement, and stories untold on the stage. The Cremorne Theatre had a fascinating history, its name a nod to the famous London gardens from the 19th century. Originally an open-air structure, the Cremorne Theatre first opened its doors in 1911, and the first show was called “The Dandies”. The theatre was frequently interrupted by rainfall, being built before the days of modern weatherproofing. The theatre was then acquired by John Neil McCallum, the father of Australian actor John McCallum. The theatre became a popular venue for vaudeville performances as well as the occasional dramatic production, with the capacity growing to 3,000 in 1919. During World War II, it became a favourite spot for Australian and American servicemen on leave. Many famous Australian entertainers took to the stage of the Cremorne Theatre. The theatre was a beacon of entertainment for decades until it closed its doors for good in 1954. The Cremorne Theatre is now just a ghost, its legacy now preserved in the new Cremorne Theatre at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, a testament to a time when the stories of the theatre intertwined with the stories of the city.
