Imagine a meteorite. This space rock was about 200 meters wide. It crashed into the Earth millions of years ago. The impact created what we now know as the Cratera de Colônia.

Today we stand at the edge of the Cratera de Colônia. This geological marvel lies in the Parelheiros district. This is on the southern edge of Sāo Paulo. It is a testament to a cataclysmic event. A celestial body’s dramatic collision shaped our landscape.

The Cratera de Colônia is not your typical crater. It is a vast bowl-shaped depression. It measures approximately 3.6 kilometers in diameter. A circular ring of hills surrounds it. These hills rise about 125 meters above the inner basin. This unique structure has intrigued scientists for decades.

The story of the Cratera de Colônia began in the early 1960s. Aerial photographs revealed its existence. Satellite images later confirmed it. The first scientific mention was in 1961. Rudolph Kollert, Alfredo Björnberg and André Davino published their studies. These professors from the University of Sāo Paulo brought it to light.

What makes the Cratera de Colônia so special? Well, there are only a few of these impact structures in Brazil. About 70 are known worldwide. The Cratera de Colônia is the closest to an urban area. It is only 35 kilometers from the city center.

Inside the Cratera de Colônia lies a treasure trove of information. A 400-meter-deep sediment column holds secrets. Scientists can analyze this sediment. This helps them uncover ancient climate patterns. They can discover biogeographic details and archaeological evidence. It paints a picture of the region’s natural history.

Studies since 2017 are still ongoing. Researchers analyze sediments from the impact. This helps them reconstruct the evolution of the Atlantic Forest. They can identify climate variability patterns. It can also explain the formation and extinction of species. Scientists from USP, Unicamp and IRD are leading these studies.

In 2007, the Parque Natural Municipal Cratera de Colônia was created. This municipal park protects the area. It combats degradation from irregular settlements. Vargem Grande neighborhood started in 1989. It is now home to about 40,000 people. The park spans about 53 hectares. It is within the larger Área de Proteção Ambiental Capivari-Monos.

Recently, scientists discovered more evidence. They found spherules. These tiny particles formed during the impact. These spherules show that the impact created extreme conditions. Temperatures reached 5,000 degrees Celsius. Pressure soared to 40,000 times normal atmospheric pressure.

Victor Velázquez Fernandez led the study. He is a geologist at the University of Sāo Paulo. He found that the spherules’ composition matches the crater’s rocks. This suggests the impactor may have been a comet.

The Cratera de Colônia stands as a protected natural landmark. It is a reminder of Earth’s dynamic past. It offers insights into the planet’s geological and ecological processes. It is also a haven for biodiversity. It preserves remnants of the Atlantic rainforest. Here the natural world continues. The Cratera de Colônia has a story to tell.
