Did that sculpture just wink at me? Right in front of you stands Crann an Óir. Don’t worry, while it seems alive with its glistening gold, it doesn’t actually wink. Crann an Óir, meaning “Tree of Gold” in Gaelic, is more than just a pretty face. It’s a symbol of Dublin’s growth and prosperity. Commissioned by the Central Bank of Ireland, it was unveiled in 1991 to celebrate Dublin’s year as the European City of Culture. Looking closer you’ll see the sculpture is made of two main parts. A gilded bronze tree reaches skyward, representing growth and prosperity. It’s encircled by a structure of Wicklow granite, symbolizing the bank’s role in protecting the country’s wealth. The open design of the granite signifies that this wealth isn’t locked away. It’s meant to be shared and enjoyed by everyone, much like the city of Dublin itself!
