Fancy this question. What building served as a vantage point, a decorative piece, and living quarters all in one?

That’s Craigneith Castle. Or what’s left of it. We’re near the Crags of Craigneith, the former location of Craigneith Castle. It stood proudly overlooking the Rotten Calder Water.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the years between 1750 and 1845. The Maxwells of Calderwood decided to build something special. They wanted a folly castle. This became Craigneith Castle also known as Craigneath or Craignith.

Craigneith Castle was more than just a pretty face. It had a purpose. First, it offered stunning views of Calderwood Glen now known as Calderglen. The upper floors provided an extraordinary vantage point. Second, it served as a picturesque castle. It enhanced the landscape. People could see it from many spots nearby. Third, it housed some of Calderwood Castle’s servants.

It was a two-story building. It had a tower and a battlemented parapet. The Maxwells truly created a unique structure.

Now, imagine a typical morning for one of Craigneith Castle’s residents. Picture an old woman waking up between 4:00 and 5:00 am. Her task? To light all 30 fires in Calderwood Castle.

She would leave Craigneith Castle. She would descend the steep cliffs. Serpentine paths guided her through thick foliage. Then, she crossed a footbridge over the roaring murky Calder. Next, she ascended the precipice via steep steps. Finally, she entered Calderwood Castle. She did this every day through every kind of weather. Tempest, rain, and gales did not stop her. She continued this routine until her death.

In the 1960s, much of Craigneith Castle was still intact. Today, not much remains. Time and weather have taken their toll. But, we can still appreciate its history and purpose.

Craigneith Castle was built using local freestone. This stone was creamy yellow. Over time, it weathered to a warm silvery grey. The battlements on the round tower added a romantic touch. Sir John Maxwell likely added these.

The castle served three functions. It housed servants. It provided scenic views. It enhanced the Calderwood Estate. It embodied the Gothic philosophy of the area.

Although largely forgotten, Craigneith Castle was once an impressive sight. It stood as Blantyre’s own castle. Its legacy remains.

Take a moment to imagine Craigneith Castle in its prime. Picture the views from the tower. Think of the old woman making her daily trek. Although ruins are all that’s left, its story lives on.
