Gazing at the neo-Gothic structure before us one can almost hear the echoes of hymns. This is Covenant Lutheran Church. It is more than just a building. Covenant Lutheran Church represents a century of faith and community in Ridgewood.
Covenant Lutheran Church was established in 1909. The congregation first acquired property at Elm and Buchmann Streets. These streets are now known as 60th Lane and Catalpa Avenue. Here in Ridgewood, they laid the cornerstone for this very church building in 1914.
Interesting fact. Did you know that Ridgewood used to be considered part of Brooklyn? Following the 1977 Blackout and the riots in Bushwick, residents wanted to separate themselves from Bushwick. In 1979, they successfully petitioned the U.S. Post Office. The aim was to change their zip code to one associated with Queens. This is because Queens is located immediately to the east.
Now let’s talk about the organs of Covenant Lutheran Church. The church has had several organs throughout its history. The specifications of the original organ have not yet been located. We do know it was acquired second-hand.
In 1918, Covenant Lutheran Church acquired a second-hand instrument. This organ was originally built in 1914 for Charles Wheeler’s residence in Peoria, Illinois. Wheeler purchased a new organ in 1917. So Covenant Lutheran Church bought his 1914 organ for $2,500.
M.P. Möller reconditioned the organ. It had tubular-pneumatic action throughout. Möller retained the casing, front pipes, motor, and blower from the existing organ.
In 1938, M.P. Möller installed a new organ Opus 6685. Albert E. Whitham noted that Arthur Hayn was acting as their advisor. The Great 4′ Octave was borrowed from the Swell 8′ Diapason. Möller retained the existing pipes. These were said to be in perfect condition. A new detached two-manual console of quartered oak was provided. The organ cost $3,470. It was completed by September 25, 1938.
The church is still active today. It offers various ministries. These include pre-school ministries and children/youth ministries. Also, it hosts vacation Bible school and Girl Scouts. Covenant Lutheran Church provides adult and family ministries. Al Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are held here. Senior citizen ministries and visitation ministry are also important parts of the church’s work. Bible and religious instruction are offered.
