Once upon a time in 1965, a unique church was born. This is Covenant Baptist Church. It emerged from the era’s movements of church renewal and civil rights. A group of about 60 individuals formed this church. They were once part of a traditional Southern Baptist church. These people grew disappointed. Their former church couldn’t respond to the social issues of the 1960s. It retreated from progressive theology. The church even hired a conservative minister. This group first created a Bible study. They started discussing a new church. This church would value Baptist principles. It would also embrace renewal.
So what principles define Covenant Baptist Church? Individual freedom is key. People can read and interpret scripture themselves. This is the priesthood of the believer. Congregational autonomy matters here. Church membership requires a spiritual commitment. It is not just a social obligation. Intentionality guides worship, education, and mission. The church appreciates rituals from many traditions. It understands that the Word comes from sacred stories. It also comes from literature, art, and personal experience. Covenant Baptist Church seeks a reunion of the sacred and the secular. It believes in the separation of church and state. It respects all people regardless of labels.
Covenant Baptist Church grew into these principles. It made tough choices. It enlarged its vision. It became more authentic. Practice and preaching meshed well. Not all original members were Baptist. Yet, Covenant affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. It also joined the American Baptist Churches. The church hoped to bridge the gap from the slavery dispute. This dispute caused different reactions to modernism.
Worship at Covenant Baptist Church was formal. It was liturgical. It increasingly became the work of the people. Lay members participated in planning and leading worship. They also participated in other aspects of church life. Southern Baptist positions became harder to ignore. These positions involved theological and social issues. Covenant eventually dropped its relationship with the SBC. It retained the name Baptist. The power of its historic principles remained. These principles aligned with its beliefs.
For 35 years, Covenant Baptist Church shared facilities with other congregations. This showed responsible resource use. St. John the Divine hosted them. Bethany Christian also hosted them. So did St. Stephen Episcopal and Bellaire Christian churches. In 2000, the congregation made a decision. It decided that its mission would be better served with its own space. This space would be designed to their needs. It could be shared with the community. One goal was to make Covenant a home for the arts. It would be a place for contemplation and education. It would serve other community needs too.
Today, proclamation, music, mission, and education are important here. Members handle much of the church’s logistics. This allows the minister time for study. It allows time to prepare proclamations. It also allows time to participate in the community. Covenant Baptist Church supports many social service activities. These include the Christian Community Service Center. They also include Omega House, Hospitality Apartments, and Project Row Houses. The church offers a full range of educational experiences. These range from pre-kindergarten to adult programs.
Covenant’s worship services are unique. They use contemporary poetry. They also use dance and drama. They incorporate spiritual tradition. Exemplary choral and instrumental music are featured. Thoughtful proclamations are given. A labyrinth sits on the church grounds. It offers contemplative walks. It serves as the basis for collaborative services.
