In 1108, the Viking king Sigurd I, on his crusade to Constantinople, encountered Berber pirates near Formentera. These pirates used the island as a base, launching attacks across the Mediterranean. Driven into the cliffs of La Mola, they sought refuge in this very cave, the Cova de sa Creu. Sigurd, determined to crush his attackers, devised a ruthless plan. He had his men lower boats filled with soldiers to the cave entrance. From there, they unleashed a barrage of arrows, filling the Cova de sa Creu with the cries of the dying. Not content with the arrow attack, Sigurd ordered a fire lit at the mouth of the cave. Smoke billowed into the darkness, choking those who remained. Forced to flee, the surviving pirates were met with no mercy, cut down by Sigurd’s waiting soldiers. From that day forward, the cave became known as Cova des Fum, the Cave of Smoke. But even before this dramatic clash, Cova de sa Creu, then unnamed, held secrets. Archaeological excavations have revealed artifacts from the Copper Age to the Middle Ages. These discoveries paint a picture of a cave used for shelter, for ritual burials, and perhaps even as a prehistoric home. The remnants of ceramic shards, metal pieces, and even weapons testify to the lives lived within these rocky walls.
