“Designed by Paul Waterhouse.” Does that ring a bell? The Coupland Building stands before us a testament to architectural vision and historical significance.

Let’s delve into the story of Coupland Building. It is more than just bricks and mortar. Originally designed by Paul Waterhouse, the Coupland Building was constructed between 1891 and 1894. The Coupland Building was initially part of the School of Medicine.

Pause for a moment. Imagine the bustling activity within these walls over a century ago. Medical students would dissect and discover. Now fast forward to today. The Coupland Building has transformed into a vibrant hub for various academic disciplines.

The University of Manchester recognized its potential. The Coupland Building became home to the School of Law and the School of Dentistry. Also, the Faculty of Humanities administration and the Directorate for the Student Experience found their place here.

But its story doesn’t end there. The Coupland Building is a Grade II listed building. It is located on the rear quadrangle of the historical cluster of University buildings. For a period, the Coupland Building was vacant. A refurbishment project commenced in November 2017. It was completed in February 2019. The aim was to restore its original grandeur.

The development focused on creating open-plan spaces filled with natural light. Vaulted spaces that had been lost were brought back to life. New facilities were added including postgraduate quiet spaces. A Legal Advice Centre, a moot room and a space for dentistry postgraduates were created. There is also a café now and a multi-function space for students. Open-plan offices accommodate the School of Dentistry and other departments.

Consider the blend of old and new within the Coupland Building. Original features were carefully preserved. Modern amenities were seamlessly integrated. This creates a usable and sustainable space for education.

Notice the seating in the lecture theatres. Ferco was engaged to replace it. The brief was to minimise disruption to the historically significant interior. The Athena model was chosen. It provides durable tip-up seating with fixed desking. The seats are sprung for comfort and have zip-off covers for easy maintenance.

The Coupland Building is more than just a building. It embodies the University of Manchester’s commitment to education. It blends history with innovation. As we move on, remember the Coupland Building. It stands as a symbol of Manchester’s dedication to progress.
