“Just look where God has brought us from.” That’s the enduring spirit of Cotton Temple Church of God. Today we explore its vibrant history.
Cotton Temple Church of God began as Gospel Tabernacle Church of God in Christ. This was many years ago. The church started in a modest building on Harrison Avenue in Jersey City New Jersey. Its journey mirrors the history of Black America.
After its start the church moved twice. First to Seidler Street and then to Union Street. During these early years the church had divine leaders. These included the late Bishop Reid the late Elder Johnson and the late Bishop F.D. Washington.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1941. The late Bishop Charles H. Cotton became pastor. Under his leadership the church grew. The Union Street location became too small. Bishop Cotton prayed for guidance. In September 1970 the congregation found a new home. This new home was later named Cotton Temple COGIC.
Cotton Temple Church of God began in 1926. Elder Clemmons led the church until 1929. Mother Milhouse took over until District Elder Luther Hamilton became pastor. In 1930 Elder Hamilton appointed Elder C.W. Johnson as pastor. At that time the church was at 32 Harrison Avenue Jersey City.
In 1932 a misunderstanding caused the church to split. The church then moved to 15 Seidler Street.
The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy honored Cotton Temple COGIC in 2003. It was recognized for its extraordinary window setting. The church also had many upgrades. These upgrades blended tradition with modernity.
The year 2020 brought challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic changed how services were held. The church shifted to digital platforms. This ensured the congregation stayed connected. Despite these challenges the church lost Pastor Embria Sconiers in 2021.
Under Pastor Moody’s leadership the church revived its outreach. Its food distribution programs are notable. Cotton Temple now feeds hundreds in the community. It also provides resources for other churches.
Cotton Temple Church of God remains a pillar in Jersey City. It flourishes and saves souls. Its history shows resilience faith and divine grace. From basic amenities to modern facilities the church’s evolution is a testament to its spirit. The church continues to spread God’s word.
