The Cotton Exchange – Mumbai is a magnificent building. It is located on Kalbadevi Road in the Zaveri Bazaar area of Mumbai. This building has a fascinating story, one that reflects the history of cotton in India. The Cotton Exchange is a testament to the golden age of cotton trading in Mumbai during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1850, the country was still under British rule, but the cotton trade was booming as the British textile mills bought vast quantities of cotton from the Indian subcontinent. The Cotton Exchange was founded in the mid-1850s and became a major hub of commerce. It was through these buildings that merchants and buyers negotiated deals that fueled the textile industry in Mumbai. It was the world’s oldest cotton exchange. The exchange was officially called the East India Cotton Association. Even though the building was constructed in the early 1930s, the relief panel above the entrance tells the complete story of cotton from sowing to export. It is a fascinating and detailed depiction of the entire process and a reminder of the importance of cotton to Mumbai’s economy. But times changed, and the cotton industry began to decline in the 1980s. As textile mills closed down and competition from other countries grew, the cotton trade was affected. The building now stands empty and is owned by a jewellery company. This once thriving exchange is now a reminder of the dynamic nature of business, a place where history and commerce intersected. It symbolizes the rise and fall of industries and the ever-changing landscape of Mumbai.
