Dive into science at CosmoCaixa. This isn’t just another museum. It’s an experience that will change how you see the world. CosmoCaixa Barcelona opened its doors in 2004. But its story began much earlier. The building itself is a historical landmark.
Originally built between 1904 and 1909 it served as an asylum for the blind. Josep Domènech i Estapà designed this beautiful structure. In 1979 the asylum closed. The building was renovated to house the science museum. Architects retained the original facade. They expanded the building to four times its original size.
As you enter CosmoCaixa prepare to be amazed. A large spiral walkway leads you down from the basement to the fifth floor. In the center stands an Amazonian tree. This Acariquara tree stretches towards the sky. Its presence connects you to the natural world.
CosmoCaixa boasts a range of exhibitions. They cover everything from the environment to space. The museum is sponsored by “La Caixa” banking foundation.
One of the most popular attractions is the Flooded Forest. This exhibit recreates an Amazon rainforest. You’ll experience both wet and dry environments. Over a hundred living species call it home. See birds insects frogs piranhas capybaras and even alligators. Ceiba trees were created using molds from Pará Brazil.
Don’t miss the Geological Wall at CosmoCaixa. It displays large cuts of geological formations. See erosion volcanism faults and sedimentation. The rock cuts come from Catalonia.
Explore the Universe Hall. It starts with the Big Bang. It moves through human evolution. Interactive modules make complex ideas easier to understand. Modern medicine wastes and robotics are also featured.
For younger visitors CosmoCaixa offers Clik and Flash. These interactive exhibitions use games. Children learn about science through play. Touch touch encourages exploration of living creatures. Animals and plants from around the world are presented.
The Bubble Planetarium is perfect for children ages 3 to 8. They can explore astronomy in an engaging way.
CosmoCaixa once featured the Hall of Matter. This exhibit covered evolution from the Big Bang. It explored the origin of matter and the birth of civilization. Gravitational waves chaos theory and human evolution were all touched upon.
