Behold the Corto Maltese mural. This isn’t just paint on a wall. It’s a journey.

The Corto Maltese mural is a massive artwork. It stretches across approximately 850 square meters on the Quai des Péniches in Brussels. It’s a vibrant tribute to the iconic sea captain created by Hugo Pratt. The creation was a collaborative effort. Artists Oreopoulos G Vandegeerde D Ardilla A Kuleczko R and Dussart G of ART MURAL asbl brought this masterpiece to life in August and September 2009.

Imagine Corto Maltese himself standing before you. He’s a laconic sea captain. His adventures unfolded during the early 20th century. The mural depicts scenes from various Corto Maltese adventures. It captures the essence of his character. He’s a man of mystery. He navigates treacherous waters both literal and metaphorical. He encounters diverse cultures and intriguing characters inspired by real historical figures. Think Stalin as a hotel porter or Rasputin as a wandering criminal.

The mural’s creation coincided with “Brussels Bad”. This was a canal-side beach festival. It transformed the area into a temporary urban beach. The mural’s inauguration was part of this lively celebration. It’s a fitting backdrop for the adventurous spirit of Corto Maltese. The artwork spans four sections. Each section is drawn from a different Corto Maltese album. “The Ethiopians” “Corto Maltese in Siberia” “The Celts” and “The Golden House of Samarkand” are all represented in this stunning display.

Corto Maltese himself was born on July 10 1887 in Valletta Malta. Legend says when he discovered he lacked a lifeline he carved one into his palm with his father’s razor. He’s a captain without a ship. He’s a symbol of independence. He navigates the ideological and political turmoil of his time. He often sides with the oppressed. His adventures take him across continents including the mythical land of Mu. He even dreams of the Grail.

The mural is more than just a beautiful piece of art. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Hugo Pratt’s creation. It embodies the spirit of adventure and the timeless appeal of Corto Maltese. So take a moment. Absorb the details. Let the vibrant colors and captivating scenes transport you to another world. A world of adventure mystery and the enduring allure of the sea. Let the legend of Corto Maltese live on.
