Imagine a vibrant procession. Priests lead church followers through Hanover’s streets. They carry a blessed sacrament. This is Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi, or Fronleichnam, means “Body of the Lord”. It is rooted in medieval Christian tradition. The name comes from old German words. “Vron” and “licham” mean “body of the Lord.” This celebration has deep historical and religious meaning.

The tradition began in the 13th century. Juliana of Liège, a canoness, had a vision. Christ asked her to create a day to remember the Holy Eucharist. This rite recalls the Last Supper. Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples. He said it was his flesh and blood.

In 1246, Juliana persuaded the local bishop. He ordered an annual Corpus Christi celebration. Pope Urban IV made it official in 1264. He declared it for the entire Latin Church. The date was set. It would be the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. This is 60 days after Easter.

However, not all Christians embraced Corpus Christi. Martin Luther opposed it during the Protestant Reformation. He disliked the Eucharist being paraded.

Today, Corpus Christi remains significant for Catholics. Some other Christian communities also observe it. In Germany, it is mainly a Roman Catholic feast. It is a public holiday in predominantly Catholic states. These include Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Celebrations vary by region. Church services are always central. Often, there’s a procession through decorated streets. The Eucharist is carried in a monstrance. Children might wear white. Adults often wear traditional clothing. Some regions, like the Black Forest, create flower carpets.

The procession sometimes includes four stops. These represent Christ’s journey to the cross. The city is adorned with flowers and religious symbols. People sing and pray. The parade ends at a church for a final service.

In Cologne, a unique tradition takes place. Over 100 ships parade on the Rhine River. Legend says a thief was stopped from crossing the river. Divine intervention prevented him. This became the origin of this special custom.

Corpus Christi is more than a holiday. It is a reminder of the Last Supper. It celebrates the Holy Communion. It’s a deeply important day. It connects the community through faith and tradition.
