From a baseball field to a bustling shopping center, the story of Corowa Koshien is truly remarkable. Corowa Koshien stands before you, a testament to reinvention. It’s a place where history and commerce intertwine, offering a unique experience for locals and visitors alike. Corowa Koshien’s journey began in 1993. It first opened as Plantan Koshien. The vision was ambitious, a “Casual Department” designed as an experimental space for 21st-century retail. With a target revenue of 180 billion yen, the project was managed by Plantan Department Koshien. This subsidiary was fully funded by the Daiei Group. Interestingly, Plantan Koshien was the last Plantan store to open in Japan. The construction itself was a collaborative effort. The Tobu Real Estate company oversaw the project, with architectural designs by Atorie Eitieito and construction by Obayashi Gumi, Shini Gumi, and Ueda Kiso. In 1995, Daiei took direct control. The name changed to Daiei Koshien. Despite the shift, many remember Corowa Koshien’s Daiei era. Its underground food court was a popular attraction, particularly on days with Hanshin Tigers games. Fans would stop by for snacks and drinks on their way to the nearby Koshien Stadium. This bustling atmosphere made the food court a key contributor to the mall’s success. Corowa Koshien’s story took another turn in 2016. The management shifted to Aeon Retail, marking the end of the Daiei era. The mall was rebranded as Aeon Koshien in 2016. Despite Aeon obtaining creditor beneficiary rights in 2017, the future remained uncertain. There were even rumors of closure. However, a new chapter began in 2018. Corowa Koshien was reborn. Aeon returned, focusing on the underground food court. This marked the start of the current “neighborhood shopping center” model. Today, Corowa Koshien thrives. It houses around 60 tenants, including Aeon Style, offering everything from daily necessities to children’s goods. The 1,000-car parking lot further adds to its appeal. Corowa Koshien remains a vibrant hub, deeply embedded in the community.
