The Corona Denkmal stands tall in the middle of Wittelsbacher Park, its willow branches reaching up like arms towards the sky. It is a place of memory, a symbol of the pandemic that changed the world. The Denkmal is a testament to the resilience of the community, a place where people can come to reflect on the difficult times we have all been through. The Denkmal is a new addition to Augsburg, designed to help us understand the trials of the pandemic and the lasting impact it has had on the city. It was created by artists Mona Schafitel and Sascha Kempter, who wanted to create a monument that would not only commemorate the pandemic but also provide a space for reflection and healing. The project was born out of a desire to create something that would capture the sadness, the fear, and the hope that were all part of the experience of the pandemic. They worked with students from Agnes Bernauer Realschule, St. Ursula Mädchenschule, and Rudolf Diesel Gymnasium to create flags that were displayed on the willow branches, each containing drawings and poems expressing the feelings of the children. Today, the Denkmal is a place where people can go to remember, to reflect, and to find hope for the future. It stands as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, we can find strength in our community and in our collective spirit.
