Cornwall, a land of rugged coastlines and ancient myths. That’s the image that likely springs to mind, not a suburb in sunny Queensland! Yet, here we stand in Cornubia, named after that very place. It’s a world away from England, but with its own unique charm. Cornubia was once a sprawling farm known as Cornubia Park, a name bestowed upon it in the 1920s. Picture vast fields of corn, oats, and barley, a testament to the agricultural spirit of the time. The rhythmic mooing of dairy cows filled the air as they grazed on lush pastures. Timber was a key industry here, fueling the growth of Brisbane and beyond. This land has seen it all, from sturdy house stumps to the sleepers that carried trains across the nation. In 1934, the Jessens, the new owners, decided to simplify things. They dropped “Park” from the name, ensuring no one mistook this working farm for a picnic spot. Today, Cornubia retains echoes of its rural past. Stroll along its leafy streets, like Sugarwood and Parkview, and imagine the farm that once thrived here. It’s a reminder that even amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, traces of our history endure.
