What if I told you that one church could stretch its arms across an entire city? Here at Cornerstone Church, that’s not a what-if, it’s a reality. Cornerstone Church isn’t confined to these walls. It pulses through the heart of Johannesburg, a network of sites and Life Groups woven into the city’s fabric. Cornerstone Church began its journey in Bedfordview in March 1983, born from the union of two Baptist communities. Led by Leon and Pat van Daele, the church first met in the Bedfordview Town Hall. Growth necessitated moves to various school halls before finally settling into its current Bedfordview location on Benard Road East in Morninghill in 1989. But Cornerstone Church wasn’t meant to stay put. In 2010, a vision took root: to become a “church in the city.” This vision propelled Cornerstone Church beyond Bedfordview, leading to the establishment of Cornerstone Church Uptown in Braamfontein. This expansion continued into Johannesburg South with Cornerstone Church South Side in Winchester Hills, followed by locations in Yeoville and Rosebank. This expansion wasn’t about buildings. It was about homes opening, communities connecting, and lives transforming across Johannesburg. Cornerstone Church embraces a dual approach: large gatherings at its sites and intimate Life Groups in homes. These Life Groups aren’t just Bible studies. They’re hubs of connection, support, and shared life. Cornerstone Church has a history of planting churches globally, supporting them through relationships and ministry. The church’s vision continues to expand, supporting church plants worldwide, working within its city and regions, and establishing more sites across Johannesburg. This vision is driven by a love for Jesus and a commitment to showing God’s love to the world, not just within its walls, but across an entire city.
