Founded in 1917 Cornerstone Baptist Church stands as a testament to enduring faith. Imagine Brooklyn during World War I. Bombs fell across Europe. Yet in the heart of this borough a small group gathered. They met in Mrs M Freeman’s home at 933 DeKalb Avenue. Led by the Holy Spirit they sought to live for Christ. On September 10 1917 Cornerstone Baptist Church was born. It was dedicated to the service of God. Reverend William H Rodman was its first pastor.

Cornerstone Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community. It served as a beacon of hope and resilience during challenging times. It quickly outgrew its first location. The church relocated several times. It moved to 688 DeKalb Avenue then to Gates Avenue and Irving Place. By the 1940s Cornerstone had become one of Brooklyn’s largest congregations. The church was known for its warm welcome and vibrant worship services.

The church’s growth necessitated further moves. A contract was signed for the Lewis Avenue Congregational Church Parish. The purchase and renovation cost a combined $57000. In 1966 the Cornerstone Educational Center opened at 289 Lewis Avenue. It is now named Dr Sandy F Ray Boulevard after a pastor who served for 35 years. This center reflected the church’s commitment to education and community outreach.

Over the years Cornerstone Baptist Church has had several influential pastors. Reverend A R Artis Reverend J J Jenkins and Reverend J R Williams served before Reverend Thomas Willis Fentress. After Reverend Fentress Reverend Dr Sandy Frederick Ray led the church to great heights. The church grew significantly under his leadership. He was succeeded by Reverend Henry G Scott and then Reverend Dr Harry Starks Wright. Currently Reverend Lawrence E Aker III serves as pastor.

Today Cornerstone Baptist Church continues to thrive. It boasts over 1500 members. It’s a multi-generational church serving the Bed-Stuy community. It offers a range of ministries and programs for all ages. From its humble beginnings in a small home to its present location at 574 Madison Street Cornerstone Baptist Church has endured. It stands as a powerful symbol of faith hope and community. Its rich history and ongoing service to its members are truly remarkable.
