From humble beginnings in a rented elementary school Cornerstone Baptist Church stands tall. Its story is one of growth faith and unwavering dedication. Pastor Richard King’s burden to establish an independent Baptist church in southwest Houston led him to Highlands Elementary School in Sugar Land. There in August 1991 the first services began. A dedication service followed on September 8 1991 officially establishing Highlands Baptist Church.
This wasn’t just any church. It was a seed of faith planted in fertile ground. The congregation soon outgrew its initial space. They purchased a former Savings and Loan Bank building in Missouri City. A name change was in order. The congregation voted to become Cornerstone Baptist Church of Missouri City reflecting their new foundation and location. Officially organized on January 24 1993 with 42 charter members Cornerstone began its journey.
Pastor King’s vision extended beyond his own leadership. In 1997 he transitioned the church to a full-time pastor Lamar Ard becoming the second shepherd of Cornerstone. The church continued to flourish. Growth spurred a move to its current location on Kingsbrook Lane in 2003. The year 2010 marked a significant milestone the congregation paid off their mortgage and remodeled their building. This is a testament to their collective commitment and God’s blessings.
Cornerstone Baptist Church has a rich history. It’s a narrative of adaptation expansion and spiritual growth. It shows the enduring power of faith community and resilience.
