West of Brisbane’s bustling centre lies Corinda a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with quiet whispers from the past. Imagine the Francis family choosing a hilltop spot in 1863 for a cemetery. This elevated ground overlooking the Brisbane River would later become Francis Lookout a Queensland heritage site. Corinda’s charm lies in its gentle growth a tranquil residential suburb that blossomed over time. The arrival of the Brisbane to Ipswich railway line in 1874 marked a turning point. It transformed Corinda into a crucial junction South Brisbane Junction until 1888 when it was renamed Corinda possibly after Sir Arthur Palmer’s pastoral station.

The 1890s witnessed the emergence of Corinda’s social heart. Cricket and tennis clubs provided recreational spaces. A school of arts fostered cultural growth. The Sherwood divisional board even met in Corinda underscoring its growing importance. Education followed gradually. Oxley and Sherwood had schools since the 1870s but Corinda’s first school was opened by the Catholic Church in 1917. It’s now St Joseph’s primary school. State schools arrived later in 1927 and 1960. The high school’s peak enrolment reached 1590 students in 1964.

Corinda’s residential areas were thoughtfully planned with recreation areas like Dunlop Park and Nosworthy Park. A vibrant shopping area developed near the railway station home to the Corinda Hall and a new Catholic church. Housing is a delightful blend of Queenslanders and early postwar dwellings. The Coles supermarket in the shopping area ensured its continued vitality even without nearby drive-ins. Between 2001 and 2002 Corinda experienced a remarkable surge in house prices. Properties west of the railway line boasting stunning views of Mount Coot-tha were particularly sought after.

The Brisbane River and Oxley Creek define Corinda’s landscape. But these waterways also present challenges. The 2011 floods highlighted Corinda’s vulnerability particularly near Oxley Creek. Water reached some houses adjacent to the parklands. Yet Corinda has shown remarkable resilience. The rezoning of the former Montrose Access site in 2013 for residential allotments reflects its adaptability and ongoing development. Corinda’s history is one of steady growth a story woven from railway lines schools churches and the enduring spirit of its people. A story etched into its hilly landscape a story waiting to be discovered.
