It’s 11 am on May 29, 1969, and the air crackles with anticipation. The SMATA column, a sea of determined faces, surges forward, a wave of blue and white shirts, leaving behind the industrial heartland of Cordoba. They are on their way toward the city centre, marching in protest against the dictatorship’s harsh economic policies. The scene is a snapshot of a simmering discontent that would soon erupt into a full-blown rebellion. Here, where the SMATA column first clashed with the provincial police, the Cordobazo began.

The Cordobazo was a momentous uprising, a powerful demonstration of working-class anger and a turning point in Argentina’s history. Fueled by a string of events – like the government’s attempts to implement a uniform Saturday closure and the “quitas zonales” – the Cordobazo saw workers and students come together in unprecedented unity.

The SMATA column, hailing from the IKA-Renault plant in Cordoba, was a driving force behind the Cordobazo. This factory, affectionately nicknamed “The Detroit of Argentina”, was a symbol of industrial progress and the heart of the local workforce. But under the dictatorship’s repressive rule, workers faced dwindling rights, stagnant wages, and a growing feeling of desperation.

The initial confrontation between the SMATA column and the police, right here, served as a catalyst, a spark that ignited the flames of rebellion. The police stood their ground, wielding tear gas and batons. But the workers, prepared for this, fought back with stones, makeshift weapons, and a fierce determination.

The SMATA column’s resistance set the tone for the events to come. The Cordobazo, a spontaneous eruption, overwhelmed the police and paralysed the city, marking a moment of defiance that would echo through Argentina’s turbulent history.
