Have you ever stood beneath a towering statue of Christ, arms outstretched, as if blessing the world? This is exactly what you’ll experience at the Cor de Jesús on the island of Ibiza. Located just a short distance north of Ibiza town, this unique landmark is a truly special sight that stands as a reminder of the island’s tumultuous past. You’ll see the monument as you drive along the road to San Antonio. It was built in 1947 to commemorate the survival of a bishop during the Spanish Civil War. At the time, the island was a battleground, churches were targeted, and priests were killed. The bishop, known on the island as Frit, found refuge in the hills near the site of this monument with the help of the local population. After surviving a harrowing period, Frit ordered this impressive statue to be constructed as a symbol of his gratitude and hope for the future.
This majestic monument of stone and cement, rises 23 metres high and was built in the style of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Cor de Jesús is much smaller than its Brazilian counterpart, but it still evokes a similar sense of awe and serenity. Imagine how it must have looked back in the 1940s, rising above the landscape, offering a beacon of hope to the people. Today, visitors still flock to the Cor de Jesús, not just to admire its imposing architecture, but also to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. This monument stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the people of Ibiza, and their enduring hope for a brighter future.
