It expanded from an initial 58 megawatts to its current impressive size. The first unit’s electricity is sold to Pacific Gas & Electric, powering thousands of homes in California.
The sheer scale of Copper Mountain Solar Facility is difficult to grasp. Imagine over nine million First Solar panels spread across 4,000 acres. That’s enough to blanket a small town. During peak construction periods, hundreds of workers were employed. They meticulously installed thousands of panels daily, braving the harsh desert conditions. Even the wildlife posed a challenge, with rattlesnakes and desert tortoises making their presence known. Special precautions were taken. A herpetologist was brought in to train the team on safe handling procedures. Even drones were used to monitor progress and ensure efficient installation.
Copper Mountain Solar Facility is located in the Eldorado Valley, near the iconic Hoover Dam. Interestingly, Boulder City, where the facility is situated, was originally established to house the workers who built the Hoover Dam. This area, with its abundant sunshine, proved to be an ideal location for large-scale solar energy generation. This proximity to existing transmission lines was another significant advantage, reducing the environmental impact and cost of connecting to the grid.
