“A grand old building this Coote House” I began my tour. Coote House isn’t just any building in Cambridge. It’s steeped in history a significant part of Trinity Hall. The imposing structure we see today though isn’t the original. The land has a long history. Long before the current Coote House a medieval castle stood here. This castle served as a strategic military post. It saw its fair share of battles. The castle was attacked three times. It eventually fell into ruin. Then a new dwelling was built. This new building incorporated elements of the old castle. You can still see remnants of the past. The basement tower rooms show signs of its military purpose. Musket chambers overlook the entrance. They’re a reminder of the castle’s defensive role. The house we see today dates back to the 17th century. Its walls whisper tales of sieges and triumphs. The Gunning family later took ownership. They added their own touches. The house underwent a transformation in the 18th century. It was remodeled in the Palladian style. But the house wasn’t always so grand. It later fell into disrepair. It became a cavernous ruin. The house had no floors ceilings stairs or windows. The basement was buried. The entrance steps had collapsed. Yet even in ruin the house held its charm. In the 1990s a major restoration project revived Coote House. The restoration brought the building back to its former glory. The five-year effort painstakingly rebuilt the floors ceilings and windows. Coote House was more than resurrected it was reborn. Today it stands as a testament to history resilience and the enduring spirit of Cambridge. It’s a building that truly deserves to be admired.
