Have you ever sailed along the coast of Durban, South Africa? Imagine standing on the deck of a ship, the salty air whipping your hair, the waves crashing against the hull. You see a beacon in the distance, a red and white tower standing tall against the azure sky. That’s Cooper’s Lighthouse.

Cooper’s Lighthouse is more than just a guide for ships, it’s a symbol of Durban’s rich maritime history. It was built in 1953 to replace the original Bluff Lighthouse, which stood on the same spot, but was demolished during World War II to make way for artillery guns. The old lighthouse was a cast-iron structure encased in concrete in 1933 after a powerful earthquake. The new one, Cooper’s Lighthouse, is a 26-meter cylindrical tower. It is painted red with a white band and has a red lantern house.

The lighthouse stands proudly on the Bluff, a high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. It was named in honour of Harry Claude Cooper, the lighthouse engineer who designed and built many of the lighthouses in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s a common practice to name lighthouses after geographical features, so Cooper’s Lighthouse stands out, a testament to its dedicated creator.

The powerful light of Cooper’s Lighthouse sends a brilliant beam across the water, flashing every 10 seconds, guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters. The neighbours on Brighton Beach don’t have to worry about sleepless nights as the powerful beam is shielded on the inland side.

Today, Cooper’s Lighthouse continues to stand as a guardian of the Durban coastline, a silent sentinel keeping watch over the ships that sail by. Its story is a tale of resilience and determination, a testament to the ingenuity of a man and the importance of a beacon in keeping the sea safe.
