Uncover the hidden stories of Cooper Park. This park is more than just a green space. It is a place with a past. Cooper Park stands between Maspeth Avenue and Sharon Street in Brooklyn.

Cooper Park began as a glue factory. Peter Cooper, an American industrialist, owned it. He started his glue business in 1821 in Kips Bay. In 1838, Cooper moved the factory to this very site on Maspeth Avenue. Imagine the sights and smells.

Cooper retired in 1838. He sold the glue factory to his family. The business eventually left Brooklyn in the 20th century. In 1895, Cooper’s family sold the land to the City of Brooklyn for $55000. The city cleared the factory. Cooper Park was born.

But Cooper’s story doesn’t end with glue. He was also an inventor. Cooper invented the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. He also invented Tom Thumb. That was America’s first functioning steam engine. He even invented Jello. His wife added fruit to the gelatin.

This place struggled initially. In 1898, Cooper Park lacked good soil. The city brought in one thousand cubic yards of soil. Workers repaved the paths with asphalt tiles. These replaced cinder and gravel.

In 1906, New York City built a shelter house. L. E. Brown provided the work and materials. Dodge & Morrison provided architectural services.

The park had renovations in 1920. Workers repaired plumbing and electrical systems. They also fixed the irrigation. That year, the park’s value was $140000.

Today, Cooper Park offers many things. It has a dog run and the Carnegie Playground. Sports facilities include basketball and tennis courts. You will also find volleyball courts and a skate park here.

In 2017, a group formed the Friends of Cooper Park. They help keep the park clean. They also work on the landscaping. Cooper Park is now a vital community space. It connects Greenpoint, Williamsburg and the Newtown Creek area.

So, as you wander through Cooper Park remember its past. Think of Peter Cooper and his glue factory. Think of the community. The community transformed industry into recreation. This park continues to evolve. It provides joy for generations to come.
