Today we explore the Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct. This structure is not just functional. It is a heritage-listed marvel. It elegantly bridges Pine Street in Earlwood and Thornley Street in Marrickville.
Picture Sydney in the late 19th century. Rapid growth demanded innovative solutions. The Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct emerged as a critical piece of infrastructure. It was designed by the NSW Department of Public Works. J. F. Carson was the contractor who brought this vision to life.
The Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct formed part of the Southern and Western Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer System. This system was essential for public health. It diverted sewage away from the harbor and waterways.
The aqueduct’s design is remarkable. It features a combination of brick arches and steel bridges. These elements showcase the engineering ingenuity of the time. The decorative brickwork reflects a sense of civic pride. The aqueduct is a marriage of function and aesthetics.
Look closely at the arches. Notice the white glazed face bricks. They are laid in an English bond pattern. Red colored brick highlights decorative motifs. Dressed sandstone marks the springing points and cornice of each arch.
The original design called for three wrought iron sewer carriers. Each was 1.8 meters in diameter. Initially, only two pipes were laid. These pipes rested on 17 segmental brick arches spanning approximately 9.8 meters each. Two steel lattice girder bridge spans measured 24 meters. Mass concrete arches within the embankment added another 24 meters. The total length of the Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct reached approximately 220 meters.
In 1929 a third sewer pipe was added. This pipe was made of welded mild steel. The original wrought iron pipes have been maintained. Defective sections have been selectively replaced over the years.
The bridge spans boast mild steel riveted construction. Cross beams support the sewer carrier pipes. Small cross lattice girders provide wind bracing. The piers supporting the brick arches are made of mass concrete. These are faced in decorative brick. They sit on mass concrete foundations. Timber piles reinforce the foundations.
The aqueduct has undergone modifications. Between 1981 and 1984, the barrels were overhauled. A modern fiberglass lining was applied to the cast iron pipes’ surface. Steelwork on the bridge spans has been replaced as needed. Fencing has been added to prevent trespassers.
The northernmost terrestrial arch now serves as a public path. It offers a unique perspective of the aqueduct. The original contract drawings show only two steel bridges crossing the river. Today, two and a half spans of brick arches are also required.
Listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register since 1999, the Cooks River Sewage Aqueduct stands as a reminder of Sydney’s past. It is a testament to the city’s engineering achievements.
